We live busy lives in an even busier world. Always trying to multitask, always looking to stay up to date. It's a wonder anyone can sit their butts down for nearly 4 hours on a Sunday to watch a football game! Why do that when you can DVR it and have the power of fast forward? (Local restrictions apply, only when your team's game is on in your local television market.)
When you think about it, these days officals aren't even watching games live, they are constantly trotting over to what looks like a ballot box, shrouded in the hood of secrecy. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. You can't see what he's watching, it's top secret... oh wait, I'm watching what he's watching right now on my TV!
The replay assistants watch the game on TV inside the 2:00 minute warning (both before half time and before the end of the game. How do you spell overkill? ) Refs watch the game on TV if the coaches throw the flag out of their sock. (That always amused me to high heaven, why their sock? If woman were NFL coaches they'd stuff it in their bra. Ratings booster HELLO?!?! Although some coaches probably have enough man boob to stuff the challenge flag in their bra, but do they have to put it in their sock? Is that a rule or something??) My favorite things refs can watch on tv and by saying favorite here I mean loathe, is time on the clock. That's right Father Time, we're saying we've got a one up on you.
It took only one hour and ten minutes of my life to watch last week's Patriots game. Afterall, half time is 15 minutes of X16 fast forward. There are appropriate speeds for different parts of the game. They are:
If you feel a commerical coming on go for X4. Because even when you get back to the game, it's not the game, you get a buffer shot like an extreme close up of a player's face, or you see the play that just happened. (In case the commericals are also memory erasers.)
After a play is whistled dead, there are some caveats to this one...
If it's a crazy play and it doesn't look good for your team ie, the other team intercepted it and you don't think it's coming back go for X4. Chances are the network will play at least 6 replays we'll call 'angles of anguish' wherein you'll see the same devastating play 6 times. Each time, you'll get your hopes up that it will be like that Gwyneth Paltrow movie 'Sliding Doors.' 'Oh please oh please tell me the receiver blinked his eyes differently this time and that means this 5th time he catches it and it's not an interception!' But that's never how it works, as it's the same play over and over again, rubbing salt in the wound. X4 through that bad boy or you'll become suicidal.
If it's a crazy play by your team and it looks like you're the ones doing the intercepting, watch 3 'views of victory,' pat yourself on the back, grunt and say that you've always liked him (even though it's a lie because he missed a big block on the other team's last possession and that lead to a touch down and two point conversion and now you're down by 1, so intercepting is the least he could do, the ingnorant idiot.) Then move on, you don't want to jinx yourself by celebrating too much.
If it's a run of the mill 5 yard gain play that's whistled dead only do X1. They should set up quickly and get on with it. Plus watch for the quarterback to move his leg like an agitated horse getting ready to take off. Once you see that move, hit play. Technology these days even gives you like 1 second grace so you see the whole snap.
If it's an extra point, you can start with X2. You shouldn't watch extra points because if your kicker doesn't make it, then he should be sent hurtling towards the other team at the kickoff. Period.
If it's a kickoff, you're allowed to assume the ball gets into the endzone, the receiver takes a knee and it comes out to the 20. X1. (see last week's blog)
Now there are some cons to watching a game this way. It is very easy to jump into X1 after what seems like a run of the mill play and miss that the ball actually popped out before the player was down. This causes a 'what the...???' reaction, but that's what the rewind button for, and hey you have a forewarning. If the ball was taken away from your team, why not take a sip of that Bud before you rewind, take some of the edge off?
In the same vein, it is very easy to miss penalties and lose track of how many yards you're set back and how many you have to go. Again a 'what the... how's it 3rd and 25?!?!?!' But the yellow lines are there to guide you, moving forward is all that really matters. Better not to focus on the negative and not get angry, right Tom Brady?
And now, men, these cons are nothing compared to the pros you'll get from your ladies when - with the 3 hours of life you've gained, you do chores around the house, right? Cause that's what we do when we have free time right???!?!?!?!
Only thing I ask is for networks to realize the benefits of fast forwarding through games and place the score, downs, yards to go, playclock, timeout counters, quarter indicator and flag icon (you know a beginner football watcher's LIFELINE) at the top of the screen away from the mandatory << > II >> (rewind, play, pause, fast forward icons in case you think my font switched to wingdings.) at the bottom of the screen.
Have a good time watching tape and benching fantasy players!

Where's the Special in Special Teams?
Week 1So it's time for footballl... what to wear, what to wear... Yes, I'm a girl - but 'dressing' for this season will be hard. You see every Patriots player's jersey I own has left the team. And not the alleged serial killer's jersey either, at least I could have traded that one in for another player's. I propose a trade in program for any player that goes to another team, leaves you miles high and dry - especially those who committ treason and go running to an evil master who is balding... (I'm really bitter about a certain short player going to said evil master quarterback who is balding. I'm not going to name names, I'm just going to talk to him like a crazed ex girlfriend addressing him after we've been broken up for 10+ years... Ahem, I even had a purse made with your jersey, what am I supposed to do with that now, huh?! ......... Yeah, I know I couldn't have brought it to games this year because of new stadium rules, huh......... you know what? Shut up!)Where's the special in special teams?Anywho. I'd like to tell you about my favorite moment when watching and/or attending games. I've been very fortunate to get tickets to games often. The seats are never primo, I'm up there in the nosebleeds with the everyman - but you know what's magical from up there? Kickoff returns where he BREAKS the tackle... benefits from a great BLOCK, finds the HOLE and goes ALL THE WAY BACK FOR THE TOUCHDOWN! When you're that high up, you see the hole open before special teams even does. You can see the future. The whole stadium's on it's feet... It's electric (boogy woogy woogy.) But lately kickoffs are BORING!
I'm all about safety, and I realize they changed the rules so the kicker is kicking for th 35 and that's resulted in a lot less injuries for returners, but I maintain, it's boring for me! And it's all about me, the fan, isn't it?
I'm a really lucky, recently engaged gal... I'm supposed to oou and ah when a guy gets down on a knee. Now, I yawn and say let's get this inevitable commercial break over with.
Let me get all statisticIE on ya... usually I don't like numbers and I thought looking this stat up on ESPN was going to be daunting, but it wasn't, you know why? Because I have enough appendages to count returns for touchdowns on. That's right, last year, there were only 13 kickoffs returned for a touchdown. 13! (fingers an toes) That's it! I only had 13 chances to watch my favorite event happen. (And the Patriots had none, which means my only opportunity to see one was if the other team made one, and then it's not fun anymore. I don't want to see that.)OK, ok, last year there were 18 punt returns for touchdowns. Which are basically just as exciting dunno why we have to get all technical and call something that's basically the same thing two different names, but whatever. So add them up 31. I don't have enough appendages for that so it's kinda hairy, but the Patriots still didn't get one. Actually if you look at the spread the most any one team got was 2 and that leaves the 'have's' (10 teams got a kickoff return for a touchdown) and 'have nots' (22 teams did not get a kickoff return for a touchdown) with a big disparity! I grew up getting dance medals at competitions that were Gold, Platinum and Diamond!Let's spread the weath shall we? That adds another element of strategy to a game based on guys in helmets, pads and really nice tight pants running into each other. You never know what's going to happen if you try to keep your eye on the ball then deal with that man running full force at you. Sure, you'll proably get injured - but that's part of strategy too. Or you could make a whole host of mistakes and get a penalty. Even 5 yards could haunt you all week as the reason you lost the game. Or you could committ a moral sin and fumble it and my team could get the ball back with really good field position, what's wrong with that? Football is the only sport I'll watch religiously because it doesn't have to be your turn on offense to make a play or even score! In baseball an outfielder can't catch a fly then run over homeplate and score - he has to wait his turn.
Can't we find another idea to make returning kickoffs fun and safe and exciting? Please let me know, I'd like to learn more about football as I write about it.
Have a good time watching tape and benching fantasy players!

Randy Held to No Catches; Favre Carted off Field Eyes Closed in Pain
"Don't let Randy get a touchdown, don't let Randy get a touchdown, don't let Randy get a touchdown!" I screamed that in the 4th quarter right before Brett got injured. And right I was to scream it, because low and behold it was perfect to Randy - but his defender (I'm sorry I feel terrible I don't remember who) got a personal foul. The ball was spotted close to the goal line and even though that hurts in football we got an eye for an eye in my book. The Vikings did score but Randy didn't get the touchdown and we had some great D and probably knocked some of Brett's teeth out...
Let's talk about Grandpa for a second. He played ok. That amazing interception by Devin McCourty wasn't Favre's fault. But what's with all his intentional grounding? That really helped us out, and I can't recall another game I've watched this season to hear that call twice on the same quarterback. Tommy Baby unloads all the time without that call.
Red Zone notes / Big Stops:
Gerard Mayo, I'm so sorry you were ripped off. That was an amazing hit in the red zone against Peterson. It should have come back with that challenge, IT WAS NOT A TOUCHDOWN!!
And right before halftime - stopping that attempt on 4th down so we just got the ball to take a knee fair and square was necessary.
And speaking of Adrian Peterson, wow, he ran the ball down our throats! I was jealous of all he could do! But when you look at it the D boys let him get regular plays but came up with big stops (I'm calling that previous paragraph as a big stop) like that one early in the game to force a punt. Let's play like it's 3rd and some on every drive.
But Mr. Lawfirm you don't do too shabby yourself. You had a nail biter of a gymnastic touchtown under the two minute warning. You found the holes and your O line made them for you. Keep that up! Perfect it!
I would like to bring up a point of contention from the last few games. ATTENTION Offense, there is a whole half of football you are not playing! The first half was basically dropped in the last 3 games. Please look at and fix what's not clicking and play that half - teams coming up like Indy will capitalize on that and you will lose purely on that fact.
And with that,
We're getting ready for for the Browns.

I hope my namesake on the Texans is getting ready to beat the Colts again tomorrow night on Monday Night football, thank you very much.
Thank you Mom and Dad for Skyping for 3 hours with video, Michael Bonner, Kevin Wilcox, Patrick Bresnahan and Jordan for being there on the texting front.

Confirmed: Welcome Back Deion
In a week where key afternoon games were decided by overtimes, the Patriots eek this one out by the hair on their chins, not on their heads (we all know that hair is sweaty greasy and flowing...ew...)
I'm back in Albany, forced to go to a local bar to *hear the Giants/Lions game but *see my game. I must admit that's a very distracting way to watch a game and it probably wasn't worth my $5.25 I spent on one beer...
I'm going to try to collect my thoughts in chronological order here. Again the Patriots decide not to play the first 3 quarters of football.
But let's talk about that one flea flicker play in the first half. BRILLIANT! Perfect execution and it just looked snazzy. The offense just clicked on that drive (it was a scoring one I believe... The Lawfirm went on to run it in.) The thing about those fancy dancie plays is you can only run them every so often.
But overall it seemed like passes were being dropped - I almost felt like the players were thinking "Oh no (only with more profane words you can insert yourself) the world watched us trade Randy Moss. Now ,I Tom Brady, have to throw to the open receiver, now I Wes Welker have to get open for my short passes to move the chains."
Neither of those guys did that I feel like that headgame got the better of them. We are still getting use to seeing no Randy? Well so are these guys. As illustrated by Brady's INT. He used to always be able to throw to my man. But not when he's triple covered (like he was when that INT was intended for him...)
But I'm going to look at the hope in all this. For all intensive purposes the guys who I expect to become forces to be recogned with didn't really show up. Where was Patrick Chung this week? Where was Grunkowski? (I have big plans for him in the red zone by the way...) And I'll preface this next one by acknowledging his touchdown first, but where was the Lawfirm? As we start to click I HAVE TO BELIEVE these guys will show up.
(Woodhead did show, I swear they can't see him so they can't tackle him... But I LIKE IT.)
Then the Defense! I think they grew up overnight, but I think we were playing too conservatively. Good job tackling the guys as soon as they got the ball, but going ahead, can't we try and make sure that pass doesn't get off to begin with? Or that it's incomplete, or that force your guy is out of bounds? It's easier said than done, I know, but something to think about as they get better.
Ultimately, I had to leave the bar in the 3rd because I had tons to do and when I get home they go and win it in a dramatic OT that I can't really comment on because I was forced to watch stupid dots on my laptop and greedily read texts from my friend.
But we did it, and Deion played a role in it too so I'm told. And that just warms my heart.
Great job pulling this one out today boys. Oh and wait, no Randy Moss post big win press conference of awkwardness or drama... I LOVE IT!
We're getting ready for the Chargers.
StaceyLynne Grande-Foster
The only thing that could make this day better is if Peyton LOSES and I get to see that crybaby face I love so much!
Thanks to Mike Bonner for getting me through the dots, Kevin Wilcox for congratulating us on the win, Paul Snyder for saying he didn't pick us "realistically"and reality are two very different things that both cause mania. And lastly to my grandma for telling me about Deion's TD.
OTHER GAMES SIDENOTE (This pass is why football makes such great VISUAL TELEVISION) Let's give credit where credit is due...
The other team (I've gotten over when Favre was at the helm of this "Cheesy" team, PRE-Texting scandal, heck, probably PRE-Cell phones period beat us in the superbowl. I'm talking about the packers.) After seeing Aaron Rodgers 86-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings - I was rooting for the packers over the Dolphins.

Welcome Home Deion?
Just some things to keep your eyes on...
This year's trade deadline in the NFL is October 19th last minute trades are usually wide receivers or defensive players.
It is still early in the talks, but Deion Branch could be coming back home to New England. I don't know if I'm ready for more contract drama in the 5th quarter, but hey it would be nice to see someone from that era come back keep Kevin Faulk company on the sidelines.
But the big question is... what number would Deion wear if he comes back? Wes has that number on lock now! I hope this isn't a problem. (I own and cherish my Welker jersey and purse!)
We should probably be rooting for our Oakland to be the worst (no offense) but I now desperately want Mark Ingram in the draft next year.
By week next week, but we're getting ready for the Ravens on 10/17
StaceyLynne Grande-Foster
Some are calling Indy's game this week a "must win." While that's kinda absurd to say at this juncture Peyton said this, ""I think guys are disappointed, frustrated, all normal reactions." Let's go Chiefs - Matty Cassel you can do it, run the ball down their throats!
Thanks Michael Bonner for tipping me off to the latest trade news and to Paul Snyder for putting Mark Ingram on my radar that young man/football dynasty (Dad was a wide receiver) needs a team like the Pats!

What will the offense look like without Moss?
Okay it's official, Randy's off to the Vikings, I hope the young defense learned how to cover him because Halloween just got more "spooky."
Right now all New England fans are a mess. Don't worry everyone - we'll figure out our feelings together, but I did title my blog In Bill We Trust only 3 days ago. This is a growing pain.
Is Randy Moss a force to be reckoned with? Definitely.
Have we won football games before Randy came along. Definitely.
So look at those games so you calm down a little bit. (they are conveniently available on DVD in 3 games to glory boxed sets)
Has the game changed since then? Yes. But maybe Moss got us away from what we did best... We did get to an AFC championship game with a 21 point lead with Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney playing wide receiver didn't we?
We've got Brandon Tate - prove why we should trust you Brandon Tate, besides running them back - now prove you can run deep and take em back.
Wes Welker - keep doing what you're doing short passes for the first down. Will this be harder because Randy did draw two defenders? Yes, but we all have to find ways to make plays.
Wes Welker light, Julian Edelman - I dunno you used to play quarterback now figure out how to make it happen for your quarterback.
The following I admitedly don't know much about Darnell Jenkins, Tyree Barns (military leave?), Taylor Price, Matthew Slater and Shun White (military leave? how poetic would it be for two real PATRIOTS to come help out?!?!?)
Some of the people who are saying the season's over for the fans, pack it up go home, those people are pissing me off! Who plays the best with a chip on their shoulder? When people don't believe in a no name backup that takes a team to the superbowl, I think his name is Tom Brady.
By week next week, but we're getting ready for the Ravens on 10/17
StaceyLynne Grande-Foster
In other wide receiver news and cheering the Colts to loose news, they plan to work out wide receiver James Hardy this week, a former Bill. This guy had two injury filled seasons - but The Colts and Peyton need help at receiver in the wake of other injuries to Anthony Gonzalez (ankle) and Pierre Garcon (hamstring). Good luck.....(not sincere)

Randy asked for a trade in week 1?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Randy Moss's rant or whatever you want to call it after week one is infamous. Now we learn that maybe right before that speech or right after he might have shot his agent an email or a quick text saying "trade me."
I feel betrayed. That rant left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, but really who wants to leave Tom Brady's side? Wouldn't Bill snap him back into the players we are used to dealing with? They both would lay down their life for this guy...
No one can argue, the timing of this latest news is impeccable. The Pats coming off a huge win against Miami where Randy didn't show up except for a missed once in a lifetime fake out spike/Tom Brady bomb into the endzone(Moss missed the catch). Against the Dolphins the rookies came up big - so did our running game without a real running back. It makes me think this may be rash trading Moss - like we are just racking up draft picks to get up more rookies we can mold. (Which reminds me after trading Laurence Maroney who are we rooting for to have the worst season ever so we get the best pick ever?)
Then again, Moss's Wikipedia page is littered with fights that cost him his seat at Notre Dame, a flippant remark about one of the saddest football tragedies ever (the Marshall Plane crash) and dating violence allegations. Now, I'm not saying our team - headed by a man with a pretty famous illegitimate son - never did anything like pretend to moon a crowd. But we love our Teddy Bruschi's and players with a chip on their shoulder that play like they are mad as hell.
I started this blog feeling melancholy, but its coming across like I've accepted it and moved on. It's for reasons like the numbers game. Now, I don't know if it's the media or Randy - but you just always seem to hear things like he's into *his*numbers. That is important yes and it's nice to put up big numbers, But if that's how he thinks, that's lame. He's playing fantasy football by himself while the rest of the players are playing like a team. Patrick Chung bats the kick down, Kyle Arrington picks it up and runs it back for a touch down - Chung doesn't do both.
You may win a big cash prize at the end of a fantasy football season, but a whole team wins the Lombardi Trophy. And Randy, if you want to try to work out a contract extension with a team that's really pushing for a Superbowl run this year because the same caliber of players won't be there next year. I give you my blessing and I wish you nothing but the best.
By week next week, but we're getting ready for the Ravens on 10/17
StaceyLynne Grande-Foster
Football is such a small sport, when Indy's former head coach, Tony Dungy was the Vikings defensive coordinator, he defended Moss's mooning incident. Hm.
PS did you hear, another hole we can exploit in the Colt's defense, Melvin Bullitt, Bob Sanders' replacement, will miss the rest of the season with a right shoulder injury.
Thanks to Michael Bonner for breaking the news to me.

Football is such a small sport, when Indy's former head coach, Tony Dungy was the Vikings defensive coordinator, he defended Moss's mooning incident. Hm.
PS did you hear, another hole we can exploit in the Colt's defense, Melvin Bullitt, Bob Sanders' replacement, will miss the rest of the season with a right shoulder injury.
Thanks to Michael Bonner for breaking the news to me.
